PLAYING TEXAS HOLDEM SNG TOURNAMENTS
I really never was very entertained playing in normal poker ring games, but I LOVED playing Tournament style Texas Holdem Poker, and Omaha Hi! I do not play in a lot of tournaments where there are hundreds of people, mainly because I do not have the time to spend online playing in them. When you have several hundred people in a tournament, you have to play 4-6 hours or more if you make it to the cash!
I really like the smaller poker tournaments, what most poker rooms call Sit-N-Go tournaments. These poker tournaments can be anywhere from a single table of 9 or 10, up to 120 players. These types of tournaments are generally done within three hours, so I have time to enjoy other aspects of life!
What I have found to be THE most productive element in playing in these tournaments, is PATIENCE! Generally in the beginning of these events, the field is narrowed quickly, with loose play, so I play a TIGHT style. While I will not avoid play early, I generally only play PREMIUM hands for the first half hour to an hour, depending on the field, and how many people exit the game early. Many people find this type of play boring, and it certainly can be, but it IS effective if done properly.
You have to avoid hands that are marginal, and save your chips for the right opportunity. If you exercise this strategy properly, and exercise good judgement, you will be able to slowly build your stack up, and get closer and closer to the money. Once you are near the money, you can sometimes take some chances with more marginal hands, and pick up some loose chips. People tighten up HUGE when it nears the cut off of the money, and will avoid risking making the money!
Think about it! MAKING THE MONEY is what counts!
Once I have made the money, I loosen up CONSIDERABLY. Now that you have cash in hand, it is time to start playing more aggresively and taking more chances with your chips. At this point, you are trying to maximize your earnings, and to get to the biggest share of the money, you have to have chips! My main goal in play, is making the final table! Once you are there, ANYTHING can happen if you are patient and ready to pounce when you get the right hand. You really DONT need THAT many good hands to place you in a position to make the big money ( generally top five places )
There will be a lot of players that find my strategy faulty. Thats fine! Some people feel they are there to win, and nothing else matters. Thats fine too.... for them! I'm there to make money, winning is a bonus! If you consistantly make the money, you will see your stake grow!
Everyone has a different style.. each of us has to determine and play to our own style, and NOT mine, or anyone else's! Find yours, and have some fun!
REMEMBER... Texas Holdem is a game.... have FUN!
